For the third time since it was formed, the Commission for Protection of the Right to Free Access to Public Information gave an active contribution to the marking of the international day of the free access to public information “I Have the Right”.
The day was marked at the “Club of MPs” and many official persons for mediating public information participated at the celebration. The member of the Commission, Ljubica Stanojovska, reminded us about the importance of this day. She spoke about the meeting held on September 28, 2002 in Sofia, where representatives from NGOs from many countries of the world, among them Macedonia, formed the network of defenders of the freedom of informing. “Macedonia is one of the 80 countries that have adopted legislation for free access to public information”, said Stanojovska.
She pointed out that the Commission makes efforts to diminish the gap between the applicants for information and the information holders, stressing the different ways of realization of their right to free access to public information. In the past two years the interest for using this right is drastically risen, yet the Commission continues through different activities and campaigns to affirm this right.
In this context a short animated film was presented at the celebration, which will mark the start the media campaign for promotion of the Law on Free Access to Public Information (LFAPI). Also, a cross section of the Commission’s work in the past year was presented. The official persons received publications “Guidebook for Promotion of the Free Access”, a poster that describes the complete procedure for receiving a requested information and an Information that contains data, analysis and details on the two-years application of the Law on FAPI. All this campaign material as well as all the held and all the planned trainings for education of the official persons are realized with the financial support of the British Embassy in RM and in cooperation with the Macedonian Institute for Media.
Stanojovska pointed out to the already begun procedure for preparation of alteration and amendment of the existing Law on FAPI in order to improve the Law and to increase its application in the realization of this constitutionally guaranteed right to access to public information.
